Saving with Homemade amish white bread

By

We love bread in our house. Not just any bread, HOMEMADE bread. Fresh out of the oven so good.

I have a recipe that I found many years ago, but have no idea where I found it. Unfortunately I can’t give credit to the original baker, but this recipe is amazing!

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2/3 cup sugar (I tried honey recently and it made this bread so so soft) $.41
  • 1 1/2 tbs active dry yeast $.17
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt $.05
  • 1/4 cup oil of your choice $.12
  • 6 cups of flour $.66

$.41 + $.17 + $.05 + $.12 + $.66 = $1.41 for 2 loaves of bread

That’s only $.70 a loaf!

Combine water, sugar and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes or until it’s nice and foamy. Add salt and oil. Mix. Add flour, mix until combined and slightly sticky. (If you use honey it will be slightly stickier). Place in well oiled boil, let rise for 1 hour. Punch the dough down, and split in half. Place each half in a well oiled bread pan. Let rise for an additional 30 minutes. Bake @ 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Butter the top of the bread immediately out of the oven.

This is our go to bread for breakfast (toast), lunch (peanut butter and jelly or my kids favorite fluffer nutter sandwiches) and dinner (buttered on the side or dip it into a soup or even made into garlic toast).
