Good morning all, today I just wanted to drop a quick message about the cost of making your own Copycat Panera Broccoli & Cheese soup. I have a recipe that I love to use on this site https://www.the-girl-who-ate-everything.com/panera-broccoli-cheese-soup/.
We are going to go through this together and figure out how much it costs to make at home. One of my daughter’s and I LOVE Panera’s broccoli cheese soup, but we very rarely treat ourselves there. The cost for us to go there regularly is not in our budget.
Okay so let’s go through the ingredients and how much each cost.
- Butter = $.75 (I paid 2.99 for a lb of butter)
- Onion = $.50 (they are currently $.99 a lb at Kroger – I buy mine in bulk and chop them up and freeze them for the winter so I am sure I did not pay $.50)
- Flour = $.02 (I also buy flour in bulk 25lb for $9.98)
- Half & Half = $1.99 (1 pint container cost $1.99 at Kroger currently)
- Chicken Broth = $2.50 (32 oz Swansons at Kroger currently – you can save money here by buying Kroger brand or better yet making your own broth – I was all out of homemade)
- Broccoli = $2.00 (I had frozen broccoli so I used that but fresh is good too)
- Carrot = $2.29 (Current price at Kroger – I bought mine in bulk in the summer and shredded some up and froze them)
- Nutmeg = $.21 ($3.99 currently at Kroger for 1.85 oz container. You should be able to get about 19 teaspoons out of that)
- Sharp Cheddar Cheese = $1.99 (Currently on sale at Kroger)
- Salt and pepper to taste = $.05 (I am going to say about $.05 because it really is negligible because it’s based on your taste on how much you use)
Okay so that’s all the ingredients needed (please go to https://www.the-girl-who-ate-everything.com/panera-broccoli-cheese-soup/ for the full recipe).
Let’s do the math:
.75+.50+.02+1.99+2.50+2+2.29+.21+1.99+.05 = $12.30
Per the recipe this makes 6 servings:
12.30/6 = $2.05 per serving
To go to Panera and order this soup you will pay $6.39 for a cup or $8.99 for a bowl of it. That means you will save yourself at least $4.34. What a great deal! This soup comes together fairly quick and easy.
I wonder what other recipes I can find copycats for and save money but still get to enjoy. What do you think? Do you have a favorite recipe you would like me to figure out the cost on?
