With rising grocery costs I know I am always trying to make the smartest purchase possible. I used to find myself in the store searching different store apps to see if I was getting the best deal possible. But lets be honest if I do that for every item I put in my cart I will be in the store FOREVER! So now I have worked really hard to do all the searching BEFORE I go to the store.
I went through the leg work of making a spreadsheet with the items I find myself purchasing regularly. I included Sam’s Club, Meijer and Kroger. I figured out the regular cost and then I figured out the unit price to see which is best.
What do you mean by the unit price you ask. Well let’s see if I can explain it easily. . . If I buy a 25 lb bag of flour from Sam’s Club it’s regular cost is $9.98. That 25 lb bag of flour I can get about 90 cups out of that. Then I divide 9.98 by 90 which equals about $.11 per cup. So if I go to Kroger and get a 5lb bag of flour regular cost is $2.69. I can get about 18 cups so I divide 2.69 by 18 cups which means unit cost would be $.14 per cup. Okay one more that same 5lb bag of flour at Meijer costs $2.39. Again I can get about 18 cups out of that, so divide $2.39 by 18 and that means it would be about $.13 per cup.
So I don’t know if anyone would find this helpful but I am more than happy to share my spreadsheet with you. Just shoot me a message. I try to review and update my spreadsheet biannually (every 6 months) so that I stay pretty current on pricing.
I use this spreadsheet to help when I do my menu planning and grocery shopping. Now I do sometimes have to do some extra math when things are on sale, but this is minimal compared to the hours I used to take trying to figure out the best cost.
Well I hope if nothing else I was able to teach you how to find the unit price so that you too can get the BEST cost to save you the MOST money possible.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
